In the book, Tina Christina Sestina, the fame-game girls want to trade their scarves and pearls for Tina Christina’s crawfish claws, snails, and turtle shell. Tina Christina refuses. Instead she takes them to meet her clairvoyant Aunt Tina at her summer camp on Big Lake Water. When Aunt Tina realizes that the three girls, asleep by the fire, are dreaming the same dream, she awakens them, saying, “You must go and find your dream creek.” Leaving camp, the three set out on the first of many bold adventures!
How did the author take events from her life to tell this tale? Where does the truth end and fantasy begin? How did the poetic form called the sestina influence the telling of the story? Author Susan Hawkinson will read sections of the story as she addresses these questions and yours. Middle school students, teens and adults will all enjoy learning about and writing the Sestina format with Susan Hawkinson!
