Ending the reference interview
Always follow up the information you give by asking, "Does that completely answer your question?" or some similar question.
If you are going to continue work on a question, make sure you do three things:
If you are not going to be working on the question any more, be sure the patron understands that, and will not be expecting you to call.
- Let the patron know who you are in case they want to contact you.
- Get the patron's name and telephone number, and repeat the spelling and number.
- Give the patron a realistic idea of when you might be calling back. Some patrons may expect a call back very soon and some might want to wait until tomorrow. Establish a definite time when the patron is available and expecting you to call back.
