This quarterly updated online encyclopedia contains full-text articles from the 29-volume print resource, New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 2nd edition. It covers all aspects of classical and popular music including musical styles, terms, genres, and instruments as well as biographies of composers and performers. The online version also includes links to images, digital sound, and Internet sites. Topics range from prehistory to the present day.

Searching

Article Search: This type of search looks for your search term(s) in article titles only. Type a word or phrase in the Article Search box that always appears at the top left-hand side of every page. Use double quotation marks around phrases. After entering your search term(s), click on Go or hit Enter on the keyboard.

Full Text Search: This type of search looks at the entire text of articles in grovemusic.com. To begin, click on Search. Then type a word or phrase in the empty search box. Remember to use double quotation marks around phrases

Under the search box, make a selection by clicking in the circle in front of one of the following search modes:

• Concept mode finds matches for words related in meaning and form (e.g. plurals) to your search term. Concept mode is the default selection for an Article search and a Full Text Search.
• Pattern mode looks for words similar in spelling to your search term. This mode is helpful when searching for words with alternative spellings or if you are uncertain how to spell a word.
• Boolean mode finds only exact matches for a word or phrase. This mode is useful when searching for a common term. You can also search for multiple terms by using the word AND to link words and/or phrases.
