ABSTRACT
A brief summary of the contents of a book or article.
ALA
American Library Association.
ALS
Arrowhead Library System, a federated regional public library system with headquarters in Mountain Iron, Minnesota
ARLIN
See RLIN.
AV
Audio-visual, including non-book materials like films, cassettes, records.
BIBLIOGRAPHIC CITATION
The correct information needed to identify a particular book or article. May include the title, author, date, pages, publisher.
CLME
Central Minnesota Libraries Exchange, the multi-county, multi-type library system headquartered in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
CORE
California Opportunities for Reference Excellence. AN LSTA project (1987-1989) of the California State Library and the San Joaquin Valley Library System to improve reference services given in California public libraries.
DIALOG
Commercial online database vendor that provides access to over 340 directories, full-text data-bases, indexes, and abstracts.
EBIN
Economic/Business Information Network. A joint venture of the U.S. Census Bureau and the Minnesota Economic Resource Group. It provides statistics and information on how to locate and use them. It includes demographics, income, employment, sales, and other business-related data.
ECRL
East Central Regional Library, a consolidated regional public library system with headquarters in Cambridge, Minnesota.
ECSU
Educational Cooperative Service Unit. The regional ECSU's provide services and promote cooperation among school districts throughout the State of Minnesota.
EPIC
Commerical online database vendor that provides access to the OCLC Online Union Catalog, ERIC (an education database), ABI/INFORM ( a business database) and several other databases.
FAKE BOOK
Song anthologies with very brief musical arrangements.
GPO
Government Printing Office.
GRRL
Great River Regional Library, a consolidated regional public library system with headquarters in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
I&R
Information and Referral. The use of community service organizations to help meet patron's needs. This includes gathering information about services, making the information accessible and referring patrons to appropriate agencies.
ILL
Interlibrary loan. One library lends library material to another library for its patrons to use.
KEYWORD
A type of indexing that uses distinctive words or phrases in a title as "subject headings". For example, "The Teddy Bears Go On a Picnic" would be indexed under the keywords teddy bears, bears, and picnic.
KRL
Kitchigami Regional Libray, a consolidated regional public library system headquartered in Pine River, Minnesota.
LARL
Lake Agassiz Regional Library, a consolidated regional public library system headquartered in Moorhead, Minnesota.
LDS
Library Development and Services, Minnesota , Department of Education. The State Library Service gives consultant service and administers state and federal grants for public libraries and multi-type library cooperation.
MELSA
Metropolitan Library Service Agency, a federated public library system headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota.
METRONET
A multi-county, multi-type library system with an office in St. Paul, Minnesota.
MINITEX
Minnesota Interlibrary Telecommunications Exchange. A publicly supported network of academic, public, state ageny, and special libraries working cooperatively to provide and improve interlibrary loan and reference services to library users in Minnesota and the Dakotas.
MLA
Minnesota Library Association.
MNLINK
Minnesota Libary Information Network. A gateway searching multiple library catalogs around Minnesota.
MULTI-COUNTY MULTI-TYPE
A network, mandated by State law, that links school, academic, special, and public libraries in a region together.There are seven MCMT's in Minnesota. They are: Central Minnesota Libraries Exchange, Metronet, North Country Library Cooperative, Northern Lights Library Network, South East Library System Southcentral Minnesota Inter-Library Exchange, and the Southwest Area Multi-county Multi-type Exchange.
MULS
Minnesota Union List of Serials, a listing of the periodicals held by libraries participating in MINITEX.
NCLC
North Country Library Cooperative, a multi-county, multi-type library system with offices in Mountain Iron, Minnesota.
NLLN
Northern Lights Library Network, a multi-county, multi-type library system with offices in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
NWRL
Northwest Regional Library, a consolidated regional public library system headquartered in Thief River Falls, Minnesota.
OCLC
A computerized system used to catalog books and other library material. Also, used to find out which libraries own what books and to place interlibrary loans for those books.
ONLINE
Equipment and software in direct communication with a computer.
PALS
Project for Automated Library Systems. This is the automated system that the State University Libraries, State Agency Libraries, public community colleges, two branches of the University of Minnesota, and private colleges in Minnesota use.
PAMPHLET FILE
Pamphlet or other information stored in folders in file cabinets and arranged by subject. Generally includes items other than books that are hard to arrange on shelves.
PCLS
Plum Creek Library System, a federated public library system headquartered in Worthington, Minnesota.
PERIODICAL
A term used interchangeably with magazines. All magazines are periodicals, but not all periodical are magazines. Periodical are called that because they come out "periodically". A serics of books might fit into this category.
PLS
Pioneerland Libary System, a consolidated regional public library system headquartered in Willmar, Minnesota.
PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM
A network of public libraries working together within a region. There are twelve public library systems, established by law, in Minnesota that provide support services to their member libraries. These twelve are the: Arrowhead Library System, East Central Regional Library, Great River Regional Library, Kitchigami Regional Library, Lake Agassiz Regional Library, Metropolitan Library Service Agency, Northwest Regional Library, Plum Creek Library System, Pioneerland Library System, Southeastern Libraries Cooperating, Traverse des Sioux Library System, and the Viking Library System.
RLIN
Research Libraries Information Network, a bibliographic utility based in Stanford, CA. Used to catalog books and to find out which libraries own a particlular title.
READY REFERENCE
Questions that are usually answered with one or two facts or with other brief information. These are often questions that are asked repeatedly and keep the answers handy. The term also refers to those reference books that help answer this kind of question and which are kept close at hand. Dictionaries, the WORLD ALMANAC, and a set of encyclopedias are examples of ready reference tools.
REFERENCE INTERVIEW
The conversation we have with a patron trying to understand their real information need, and getting enough background infomation to do a good job filling the need.
REFERENCE REFERRAL
Sending a patron's question to your central library or reference center when you can't locate a good answer in your branch/library. Once you have sent it in, it can be referred in turn to yet other libraries and sources for answers.
SAMMIE
Southwest Area Multi-county Multitype Inter-library Exchange, a multi-county multi-type system based in Marshall, Minnesota.
SELCO
Southeastern Libraries Cooperating, a federated regional public library system headquartered in Rochester, Minnesota.
SELS
South East Library System, a multi-county multi-type library system with offices in Rochester, Minnesota.
SERIAL
A work which comes out over time in several parts. Magazines are serials.
SMILE
Southcentral Minnesota Inter-Library Exchange, a multi-county multi-type library system with offices in North Mankato, Minnesota.
VERIFY
To make sure the information you have is corect. You verify interlibrary loan requests before sending them to be sure you are ordering the title and author that the patron wants.
VLS
Viking Library System, a federated regional public library system headquartered in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.
