Legal and Ethical Issues

Ethics of library service

Library work has a set of ethics that all library employees should understand.

This set of ethics help us to preserve our users' rights to privacy, to fair and equitable treatment, and help ensure that people who need information have access to it.

These are guidelines only. Many of the issues are very complex, and there are not always easy answers to every situation.

Please check with your supervisor if you are not sure how to handle a situation. You should also be familiar with your own library's policies and procedures.

While the term "librarian" is used frequently in the following guidelines, everyone who works in a library needs to follow these guidelines in transactions with the public.
