This program has been approved for Philosophy Competency #5 and Public Services Administration and Planning Competency #A8 for 1 contact hour. Virtual Reference. 24. Folksonomies and Tag clouds. 25. Blinkx and Singingfish. The program explans briefly each technology and gave an example of a library that is the using the technology. Collection Development Sequence and Introduction to Technical Services and Catalog Records

This program has been approved for Technical Services Competencies A. Collection Development and Management #2: Recommend policies and procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, maintenance and weeding of library materials for 7.5 contact hours. This course is on the web at http://www.libraries.idaho.gov/able. There are 4 courses under collection development sequence. There is 1 course under technical services sequence (Introduction to Technical Services and Catalog Records).
  1. Take the course online and answer the questions at the end of each section and the final exam. Print out the questions and answers to the quizes and the final exam to include with your portfolio.
  2. Take the Introduction to Technical Services and Catalog Records and answer the quiz questions. Print out the questions and the answers to include with your portfolio.
  3. Read "Circulation Services" by Nancy R. Nelson in "Technical Services Today and Tomorrow" by Michael Gorman, pp. 157-162, and answer the following question: Discuss circulation policies and procedures with circulation staff at your library. Are there additional policies that need to be included? If so, what other policies need to be addressed. Include a copy of the circulation policies and procedures with your portfolio.

Diversity in the Library: A Way of Life

This program has been approved for Philosophy Competency #7 and Public Services Direct Patron Services Competency #B1 for 1 contact hour. The video covers dealing with diversity in patrons and in staff. The video covers a scenario with black teens making noise at a computer. Another scenario covers a hearing impaired patron. Another scenario assumes a Mexican patron does not speak English. A dyslexic staff member is discussed and a staff member who dresses differently is shown in a scenario. View the video and complete the following.
  1. Fill out a Transfer of Learning form.
  2. Describe a patron population that comes to your library (this can be teens, people from another country, the elderly) and list assumptions you have made about this group that may have created a barrier to your providing good service.

Google Book Search: its Impact on Scholarship and Libraries

This program has been approved for Philosophy Competency #5: Monitor and respond to trends and developments within the field, including the use of appropriate technology in all library functions and for Public Services A #5: Explain library copyright requirements. This program is 2 contact hours. The program describes the books Google is putting online and the reactions of publishers and librarians. Copyright issues are addressed. Hispanic/Latino Youth Librarianship on WebJunction

This program has been approved for Philosophy Competency #7 and Public Services Direct Patron Services Competency #B1 and #B7 and Technical Services Acquisitions #1 for 2 contact hours. This course looks at the ways to better serve library users interested in Hispanic/Latino matterials. The course is filled with recommended books, articles, and Web sites, and learners are able to create a personalized list of these references. This program has been approved for Public Services Competencies A#2 and A#9 for 4 contact hours. The competency is Public Services Abilities-- Administrative and Planning Services: Market library services. A9 competency is Demonstrate skills in the use of audiovisual equipment (Technology Competency).

This course is on the web at http://www.webjunction.org. It is in the WebJunction Course Catalog under Basic Computing and Applications Series.This program covers: How to use Power Point software. The items covered are: Normal and Outline Views; Slide Views and Notes; Using and Coppying Slides; Creating and Deleting Slides; Wizards and Templates Masters, Headers, Footers; Modifying a Presentation. To receive competencies and contact hours for Certification, do the following homework:
  1. Design a slide show using Power Poin to explain a service or services your library offers for a specific audience.
  2. Set up and use a computer and projector to show this presentation to your supervisor, your director, or your target audience. Include a print out of your slide show with your portfolio.
  3. Do a short audience evaluation of your Power Point. Ask them if the slides were useful in helping them undersstand the topic: Ask them How you could improve the slide portion of your presentation.

Answer the questions and turn them into your Regional Contact Person.

Preservation Basics: An Introduction to Preservation Issues

This program has been approved for new Technical Services Competency D2 for 5.5 contact hours. "This course covers the causes and effects of deterioration of various fomats of library and archival material. Also discussed will be mold and pest prevention; card and handling; and storage issues. There is a registration fee posted on the website. A Transfer of Learning Worksheet is required.

Serving Immigrant Populations: A Library Prototype for Diversity

This program has been approved for Philosophy Competencies #2. Demonstrate a basic understanding of a library serving its community and #7. Demonstrate awareness of and willingness to serve culturally diverse individuals. Public Services Direct User Services #1. Communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds for 2 contact hours. This Soaring to Excellence Program gives examples of libraries serving immigrant populations and how to find immigration statistics. Homework Questions:
  1. Take a close look at your library and identity five barriwes to service for immigrants. Once your've identified them, offer suggestions as to how each could be changed.
  2. Following the model of Marc Thomas, identify the immigrant population of your community. Include as much information as you can to provide a basis upon which to begin serving that population
  3. Idantify at least three possible partnerships in your community that could assist in the library's service to immigrants. Who are they, what do they provide, how can they help you, and how can you help them..
  4. How would you define the term "cultural negotiation"? Identify three possible ways to begin "cultural negotiation" in your library.
