Description: This is a required workshop for the Minnesota Certification Program for Library Employees. Introduction to Library Service Day 1 provides information on the competencies and requirements for MN Certification. Lean how the physical space, the materials, the library staff and the various functions of a library work together in serving the community. Learn how standards, guidelines, and policies govern library sevice. Understand the history of libraries.

The homework will help you learn about the MN Statutes relating to Libraries, Core Values of Libraries, Intellectual Freedom, and your library's community.

Bring to Day 2:Handouts from Day 1, Standards for Minnesota Public Libraies, Seven Assignments, including Learning Jounal, New Behavior Check-List, and Five or more articles from popular magazines or newspapers on issues or trends that could/can/do impact libraries.

Introduction to Library Service Day 2 is a discussion of the homework. Learn about the mission of libraries, the funding for libraries, and the library in the political process.

Learning to Use New Technologies

Presenter: Maurice Coleman is currently the Technical Trainer at Harford County, Maryland, Public Library located in the North Eastern corner of Maryland. His job is to help staff leverage new and existing tools and technologies in an innovative library sytem; to provide group and individual training in a variety of areas to library staff; and to foster communication between geeks and non-geeks. He has presented at National, State, and City/County wide confeerences on technology and community development issues.

Description: Maurice will demonstrate gadgets: GPS, web cam, digital camera with video, sony e-reader, iPod, and wii and provide tips for training

Presenters: Nancy Pearl. The New York Times calls her the talk of librarian circles. Readers cannot get enough of her recommendations while bookstores and libraries offer standing room only whenever she visits. Since the release of the best-selling Book Lust in 2003 and the Librarian Action Figure modeled in her likeness, Nancy Pearl has become a rock star among readers and the tastemaker people turn to when deciding what to read next.

Description: Doorways into Reading: Improving Readers' Advisory Skills
This session will focus on defining, refining, and using the concept of doorways into reading; the role of mood and motivation in selecting a good book to read, as well as offering tips and tricks to use in readers' advisory work at the reference desk. This workshop is for public and library staff from all types of libraries and anyone working on Minnesota Certification Program. You do not have to be a participant in Minnesota Certification Program to attend the workshop. The workshop covers the readers' advisory transaction, readers' advisory tools. It will include collection development and ILL.

When/Where: Sunday, March 30, 2008--College of St. Catherine, Jeanne d'Arc Auditorium. 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Park in the O'Shaughnessy parking lot. This session is Nancy Pearl with Readers' Advisory.

Subsitutes: LSTA funds are available to reimburse substitutes. If you need to be reimbursed for a substitute, you must submit a bill from your fiscal agent (ie, public library, regional public library system, school, or school district), to the Arrowhead Library System, 5528 Emerald Avenue, Mt. Iron, MN 55768. .Bills will be accepted no later than April 20, 2008 for the March and April Workshops; and the day of the workshop in September for the September Workshops.

Note: Before registering, please check with your local library/system for any continuing education requirements (ie, approval from Supervisor or Director).
